13. And We're Off!
Today was a big day: transplants went into the ground with prayers to the Earth gods that our last frost has passed. Into the beds went summer and winter squash varieties, pac choy, and pumpkins, and I still need to reseed more cool weather crops like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuces, beets, turnips, radishes, herbs, kale, spinach, chard, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, peas, and carrots. The warm weather crops will have to wait a bit, I think, since I don’t trust the temps to remain as pleasant as they’ve been, and we have some wicked wind across the field, so those little peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant would be surely windswept and shocked by the cool nights and mornings in no time.
Wait, Megan, just wait!
Meanwhile, I got my chickens back and they have been laying like gang-busters (or more accurately, great for a bunch of post-menopausal hens who were recently moved to another state). They are very much enjoying farm life, and all of the new land to peck and dig in, though they have an annoying preference for under the porch, and the beds where I’m trying to cultivate flowers. Of course. I should have known that where ever I don’t want them to be, there they will congregate.
Happy Earth Day, too! We had a beautiful day for it, and I feel invigorated by the sun and wind and smell of soil on the air.
Hope you all took time to thank the Earth for sustaining us.
