44. Happy Imbolc!
In Celtic and Wiccan traditions, today, February 1st, is the beginning of spring, and I’ll take it.
Our winter has been sporadic but very cold, freezing our pipes three times, and keeping me chopping wood every day to keep our home extra cozy. But since I’ve been home “resting” because of the eye surgery, I’m actually ahead of the game on the garden this year. I’ve already started all of my herbs (with a second wave of seeding coming next week), the long-season brassicas (broccoli raab, Brussels sprouts, cabbage), and some early and mid-season crops that I want vigorous for transplant come April, like leeks, celeriac, onions, fennel, broccoli, lettuce, and kale.
New chicks and geese have been ordered to replenish and add to breeding and laying stock, as well as more fruit and nut trees, and elderberry, raspberry, and strawberry plants. Plus, 65 pine, fir, and maple trees.
I am stoked.
I’m also hopeful that I’ll be back at the market soon to sell the surplus of eggs and greens that have continued to accumulate during my absence from the regular Saturday gathering of farmers and crafters.
So really, nothing much to report other that I continue to slowly heal, sow, plan, and dream about the coming season, wishing a hopeful and happy Imbolc to those who observe.
